Description
Franquette is a classic walnut for gardeners who value late spring growth, high-quality nuts, and the grandeur of a true shade tree. Its well-sealed, relatively thin-shelled walnuts hold light kernels with rich, buttery flavor, making them excellent for fresh eating, baking, roasting, and storage. The variety is especially notable for leafing out later than many English walnuts, a trait that can help its developing growth avoid some spring frost events.
Over time, Franquette becomes a large, handsome tree with a broad green canopy and strong ornamental presence. Although production may be more measured than some modern commercial varieties, the nut quality and dependable late-season character give it lasting orchard value. For a home planting with generous room—and especially as a companion to Chandler—Franquette offers heritage, useful pollen timing, flavorful kernels, and the enduring appeal of a substantial walnut tree.
Choose full sun and deep, well-drained soil with ample space for a standard tree on Paradox rootstock. Establish strong scaffold branches while young and site the tree well away from structures, paving, and small garden areas that could be shaded as it matures.
Franquette is self-fruitful, but the confirmed sheet recommends Chandler as a pollenizer for higher yields, particularly while trees are young. Together they create a complementary walnut planting.
